DCAF and Small Arms Survey organize a training session on the smuggling of light weapons in North Africa

Tunis, 28-30 November 2017: DCAF and Small Arms Survey organized a three-day training workshop on the smuggling of light weapons in North Africa that was attended by thirteen Tunisian journalists, as well as two journalists from the Moroccan and Egyptian news agencies and a Libyan journalist.

The training workshop aimed at enhancing the participants’ capacity to objectively document and report on trade and smuggling of light weapons in North Africa. More specifically, it allowed them to:

  • understand the importance and challenge of documenting and covering issues related to the smuggling of light weapons ;

  • get acquainted with the dynamics related to both the authorized and illicit trade of light weapons;

  • Learn how to identify and track light weapons;

  • Discover new field data collection methods.

A representative of the ministry of Interior presented to the journalists a sample of light weapons and ammunitions used by the Tunisian Internal Security Forces (ISF).

The training is part of DCAF’s support to media as they play a critical role in indirectly overseeing the security sector.

DCAF’s contribution to this workshop was financed through DCAF Trust Fund for North Africa (TFNA). The donors are Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Further information on DCAF is available on DCAF website or on DCAF Tunisia website.
