DCAF supports the Tunisian War College on good governance of the defense sector

Tunis, 18-20 September 2017: DCAF held a three-day training for officers and civil servants at the Tunisian War College (École Supérieure de Guerre- ESG) focusing on good governance of the defense sector and the role of armed forces in a democratic society.

The lively discussions notably revolved around the relations of the armed forces with the legislative and executive powers as well as the civil society, crisis communication, the “white paper” on defense and security, military justice and some case studies.

Most participants stated that they were exposed to these notions for the first time. Organizing trainings for the benefit of ESG’s audience, notably composed of lieutenant colonels, is an important part of DCAF’s strategic goal of “supporting communication and information sharing on good practices”, as some of them are to occupy key management positions.

The ESG expressed appreciation for the level of expertise DCAF was able to bring in and is eager to provide its students with a broader programme next year on good governance of the defense sector, in cooperation with DCAF.

This project which aims at “supporting management of change among security providers” is financed through the DCAF Trust Fund for North Africa (TFNA). The Fund is financed by Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Further information on DCAF is available on the DCAF website or on the DCAF Tunisia website.
