DCAF supports HAICA and the public media in setting up a unit to fight against fake news and online misinformation

DCAF supports HAICA and the public media in setting up a unit to fight against fake news and online misinformation

Tunis, September 10, 2019: In partnership with the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HAICA) and the public media of the National Radio and Television as well as the Tunis Afrique Presse Agency (TAP), DCAF supports the setting up of a unit to fight against "fakes news" and online misinformation.

This unit, set up at the initiative of HAICA aims to fight against this phenomenon as well as campaigns of misinformation carried on social networks and taken up by the traditional media. The unit will interfere in particular to check the information shared on social networks during the Tunisian presidential and legislative elections in September and October.

DCAF is involved in this project by providing expertise, through the mobilization of a Belgian expert on the security of the State. This expert presented the Belgian experience in the fight against disinformation campaigns online during the election period at a previous symposium organized by HAICA last June.

DCAF also supports HAICA through its national media expert for the training organization and the support of the media unit set up for factchecking.

This project, the first of its kind in Tunisia and the Arab world, is supported by all Tunisian public media. It should extend beyond the electoral period to allow a factchecking on all the topics covered by the Tunisian media including those related to security sector reform.

This project is part of the support program for media and independent authorities in Tunisia. This project is funded through the DCAF Trust Fund for North Africa (TFNA). The Fund is financed by Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland. Further information on DCAF is available on the DCAF website or on the DCAF Tunisia website
